Experimental Type

Animation

About the Project

For this experimental type animation, I found interest in working in a analog, stop motion style. I was inspired by projects like “Linear Dreams” Richard Reeves, “Rhythmic” Norman McLaren, “Korean Alphabet” Kim In Tae (NFB) and the more recent work of Sylvian Chaussée. I created this stop motion by scratching and painting and inking the individual 35mm frames, then scanning and stitching them together to make this film inspired by typography and letterforms.

In total there were over 90 frames that became a 35 second piece. Using FireAlpaca to plan the frames digitally, I found the process of scratching away the emulsion to create this super textured experimental animation slow, but nicely meditative.
